Sylmar is the northernmost neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley, backed by the San Gabriel Mountains and the Newhall Pass. Housing ranges from postwar single-story ranch tracts on the flats to horse properties on larger lots in areas like Rancho Cascades, hillside homes near Olive View and newer two-story tile-roofed tracts higher up the slope. The canyons above Sylmar act as wind funnels. Santa Ana events come down through the Newhall Pass and out of Lopez and Kagel canyons carrying dust, dry brush and oak leaves onto every roof, and the olive trees, pines, eucalyptus and pepper trees on the lots add their own litter. The foothill streets are mapped as very high fire hazard zones. The 2008 Sayre Fire and the 2019 Saddleridge Fire both started in Sylmar, and the 2017 Creek Fire came out of Kagel Canyon into the foothills above Olive View.
