Stevenson Ranch is an unincorporated community on the west side of the Santa Clarita Valley, built from the late 1980s through the 2000s. The homes are two-story stucco houses with concrete tile roofs in HOA tracts, with Southern Oaks as a 2000s section and Westridge, which carries a Valencia address but sits just north of Stevenson Ranch in the same unincorporated area, holding the largest homes. Nearly every lot is a graded pad on a slope, with a retaining wall or a bank behind the house.
The landscaping is ornamental rather than native, with palms, pepper trees and parkway pines doing most of the shedding. Palm fibers are the constant problem, wrapping around downspout screens and corners where the wind piles them. Stevenson Ranch sits on hills west of the 5 that are exposed to Santa Ana winds, so dust and dry debris arrive between every rain. The brush on the slopes above burned in the 2017 Rye Fire, which put Westridge under a mandatory evacuation order, so the late-summer clean is about ember fuel as much as drainage.
