Porter Ranch sits against the Santa Susana Mountains at the top of the San Fernando Valley. The older tracts between Devonshire and Rinaldi date from the 1960s and 1970s, but most of the community is newer: Porter Ranch Estates, Renaissance, Sorrento, Hillcrest and Westcliffe are newer tracts, some of them gated, built from the 1990s into the 2020s, with two-story stucco homes, concrete tile roofs and long gutter runs on graded hillside pads.
The foothills are the reason gutters here fill between visits. Santa Ana winds hit Porter Ranch before they reach the rest of the Valley, carrying dust and dry brush off the mountains and stripping the pines, oaks, eucalyptus and ornamental trees in the tracts. The upper neighborhoods are mapped as very high fire hazard zones, the 2008 Sesnon Fire destroyed homes here, and the 2019 Saddleridge Fire burned into the east side of the community, so a late-summer gutter clean is part of fire preparation here, not just maintenance.
