Oak Park is an unincorporated Ventura County community between Agoura Hills and Thousand Oaks, built almost entirely from the late 1960s through the 1990s. Most homes are two-story stucco tract houses with concrete tile roofs on graded lots, with single-story ranch homes in the older sections. Sutton Valley, at the north end of the community below Simi Peak, has homes on the upper slopes next to Oak Canyon Community Park.
The name is accurate. Coast live oaks were preserved throughout the tracts and along Medea Creek, and they overhang roofs across the community, dropping tassels in late spring and leaves through the year. Pines, sycamores and ornamental trees fill in the rest. Wind comes through Lindero Canyon and off the open space, and Santa Ana events refill a clean gutter with dry oak litter in a day. Oak Park borders open space on the north, east and south, the 2018 Woolsey Fire burned through the community, and the hillside sections back onto brush, so dry gutters in late summer are a real concern. In winter, tile roofs shed a lot of water fast, and a clogged downspout on a sloped lot pushes it over the slope and against the stucco.
