Malibu is 21 miles of coastline backed by the Santa Monica Mountains, and its homes split into two kinds. Beachfront and bluff houses in Malibu Colony, Carbon Beach, Point Dume and Malibu Road face the ocean directly, and canyon and hillside homes in Serra Retreat, Corral Canyon, Las Flores and Big Rock climb the slopes above Pacific Coast Highway. Flat roofs, metal roofs, tile and composition shingle are all common.
Salt air is the first problem. It corrodes fasteners, pits aluminum and eats through gutter seams faster than anywhere else we work, so a Malibu gutter needs to be inspected as well as cleaned. Coastal wind pushes sand and grit into the troughs even on lots with no trees, while the canyons add sycamore leaves, oak litter and chaparral debris. Fire has hit hard and recently. The 2018 Woolsey Fire destroyed hundreds of homes in the city, the 2024 Franklin Fire started above Pepperdine on Malibu Canyon Road and took about 20 structures, and the 2025 Palisades Fire took most of Big Rock and the eastern beachfront, so dry gutter debris in fall is a serious concern on hillside homes.
